Desire of change ? Change of desires ?

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Over the past few months, we have discussed, written, petitioned and recently demonstrated about changing the world. With enthusiasm and sincerity. At least I have tried. We also made some fun about the vanity of our hopes. But at least we felt good being part of something bigger than us 😉.

Entertaining a sense of cowardly relief while expecting that things could at least go back to normal....

Let’s face it. In the mirror. There is more to change: changing oneself!

Tolstoy famously wrote: «There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one; the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself».

However difficult changing oneself is, it still remains easier than changing others or the world. As per Descartes: «My third maxim was to try rather ...to change my desires than the order of the universe».

And now we are at a point where if we don’t adjust our desires, the order of the universe could change for the worst. To truly change the world the challenge once more is to change ourselves. The toughest job!
